Fall is in the Air, "The Conspirator" and Mary Surratt

Yesterday was rainy. We needed the rain, but it came down in buckets. I'm not complaining; I just got a bit soggy running errands.

Last night it got downright cold. Good weather for chili and hot chocolate--but not together.

In weather like this I am inspired to read and write.

I also like to watch movies when there's a chill in the air. Last night, after the grandkiddos went to bed, I watched "The Conspirator." The film is about the trial of Mary Surratt, a Southern woman accused of conspiring and harboring John Wilkes Booth and others who plotted to assassinate President Lincoln.

After the movie I found myself up into the wee hours doing research on Mary Surratt. I thought she would be a great character for a story.

How about you? Does cooler weather affect your writing?

  1. We actually have a chance of rain in our forecast all next week. I'm so excited! I love to write while it's raining outside.

Hope you get the rain you're wishing for, and I agree about loving to write when it's raining out.

  3. I'm a slug in cold weather, not very productive, but I do read more.

  4. Hmmmm...I prefer writing when it's bright and sunny--although in the summer, it's hard for me to get down to work. But I think that has more to do with summer = vacation than the weather. ;-)

  5. I become a slug in the summer. The cool weather energizes me.

Would you recommend the movie? What interesting things did you learn about Mary Surratt during your research?

  6. I'm with you, Donna! The crisp weather and all things autumnal inspire me to be creative--I want to do it all--write, read, bake pies, sew, sketch, go for long walks!(Between you and me, I even get the urge to clean!)

  7. Hi Linda,
I can't imagine you ever being a slug. You have so much energy!

    Hi Cathy,
You are such a bright and sunny person!

    Hi Sioux,
I'm with you about cooler weather. And I do recommend the movie "The Conspirators."
I learned that she was a Catholic convert who was active in her faith. I also read about the circumstances of how her son was caught.

Right after high school I worked with a young woman whose last name was Surratt, and whenever some of the older employees heard her last name they acted like they recognized it. I think her great, great-grndfather was relateed to Mary Surratt. That's when I first heard about Mary , and I guess my curiousity remained dormant until I watched the movie.
