Friday Field Trip - Disney's Earth Movie

Another warm day in St. Peters. High 85 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms. The weather was glorious last evening for Michael's ballgame. Michael went 1 for 3, with a single and two RIBs. The Bulldogs won 17-8. They are 2 and 0. Go, Michael! Go, Bulldogs!

I'm excited today to be a chaperone/carpool driver for Michael's fourth-grade class on their field trip to see the Disney movie, "Earth." The trailers for the movie look spectacular, and according to the Disney website they will plant one tree for each ticket sold during Earth Week. How's that for a good deal?

  1. Donna,
How was the movie? I saw the preview, and it did look great. Did the kids like it? Did it hold their attention?

  2. Hi Margo,
    It was amazing!
The kids, about 40 of them, sat spellbound in their seats. They laughed at the cute parts, were totally silent during some of the dramatic scenes, and stood up and cheered at the end.
There were a few scenes that were very intense. One of the other chaperones commented that her daughter was upset when one of the animals was killed. But the killing wasn't gory or bloody--it was mostly done off camera, but you knew what was happening. Of course, it all is part of the circle of life, and I think the movie makers did a fantastic job portraying that realisticly, but not too graphically.
Next year's movie will be Ocean, and the trailers for that also looked wonderful.
All-in-all it was an enjoyable day. I recommend the movie Earth with a caution that there are a couple of intense scenes that might upset some young viewers.

  4. Hi Yasminka,

That's a tough one. Four years old is such an impressionable young age. I don't want to say yes or no because it's really a personal parental decision and depends upon the individual child.

I think that 95 percent of the movie is appropriate for children of any age, but there are a couple of brief scenes that might upset children, especially if they are sensitive or easily frightened. In one scene, the "killing" is done off camera, so it's not extremely frightening--at least not to the 10-year-old children I was with--although they knew what was happening. At that part they got very quiet, but I heard a few "awws." The scene at the end of the movie with the polar bear was sad and had some "beastly behavior."

I think the most upsetting scene for young and sensitive children is the one with the elephant and lions at the watering hole. It even made me cringe. That might be a good time for you to take your child for a pottie break.

But really, the best way to make sure the movie is appropriate for your child is to go to the movie beforehand. Because you know your child best, previewing the movie would be a good way for you to know which scenes might be upsetting and can act accordingly. And, really, I thought the movie was good enough to see twice.

    Hope this helps.

    Donna
