Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day - Saturday, December 3, 2011

Tomorrow marks the second annual Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day.

The idea for this annual event came about because writer and blogger Jenny Milchman noticed she was taking her children to bookstores around this time of year for story times and other events.

Her idea took off, and now more than 250 bookstores in 45 states, three Canadian provinces, England, and this year, even the Gold Coast of Australia. Click her to see the stores participating in the site's interactive bookstore map

Just shows the impact that one person with a great idea can make.

  1. I so love this idea! I took my kids to the library much more often than the bookstore. Buying a book was a real treat. So at Christmas, we always bought one book (okay, two) to read during the holidays. Makes me smile, thinking of the Cajun Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Corduroy's Christmas...hmmmm. I'm just now seeing a trend in the books the kids picked. ;-)

  2. Hey Cathy,
Isn't it a cool idea? Christmas is a great time to get children to read. I've already bought books for my grand-nephew twins who are six. The younger kiddos in my carpool are also big readers. It's inspiring to realize new generations are falling in love with reading.

  3. It is a wonderful idea. Perhaps if we had more than annual days like this, we'd have more independent bookstores around.

  5. I'm a beliver that the best gift to give a child is the love of reading. My son and I still share books. On his Thanksgiving break he gave me "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynaman!" required in his research class. It isn't one I would pick but I'll read it just so we can talk about it. Kudos to Jenny Milchman for sharing.

  6. I am so thrilled, my nine year old grandson loves reading and excitedly tells me about his latest, which is always the "best book I have ever read!"

  8. Pretty much every child I know is getting a book and/or a gift card to a bookstore this Christmas from me and my husband. And I'm sure you could guess what's on my Christmas list... :)

  9. When my son was growing up, there were no bookstores in our area. The library was our favorite hang out. My son was recently telling me that he has me to thank for being a reader and a free thinker. The library is still a special haven for me.

  10. Hi Sally,
How wonderful that you and your son share a love for reading.

    Hi Linda,
That's great that your grandson loves to read.

    Hi Lynn,
    You are welcome!

    Hi Madeline,
I agree. Books make great gifts.

    Hi Clara,
Libraries are special places. What a wonderful testament from your son!

  11. Wonderful idea! If anyone lives in Santa Fe - stop by the new Beehive Kids Bookstore on Montezuma - it's a charming children's bookstore, and there's a grown-up's section too.

Donna, just received and read your story - so wonderful! Just the right holiday spirit. I spent 7 years in AZ and always struggled with the holidays that didn't seem like holidays! I needed your son to straighten me out...

    Merry merry Christmas
